Question 31
A man takes 5 hours 45 min. in walking to a certain place and riding back. He would have gained 2 hours by riding both ways. The time he would take to walk both ways, is :

A
3 hrs 45 min
B
7 hrs 30 min
C
7 hrs 45 min
D
11 hrs 45 min
Correct Answer: Option C

Let the distance be x km.
Then,
(Time taken to walk x km) + (Time taken to ride x km) = 23/4 hrs.
=> (Time taken to walk 2x km) + (Time taken to ride 2x km) = 23/2 hrs.

But, time taken to ride 2x km = 15/4 hrs.
∴ Time taken to walk 2x km = ( 23/2 - 15/4) hrs
= 31/4 hrs
= 7 hrs 45 min.

Question 32
A farmer travelled a distance of 61 km in 9 hours. He travelled partly on foot @ 4 km/hr and partly on bicycle @ 9 km/hr. The distance travelled on foot is:

A
14 km
B
15 km
C
16 km
D
17 km
Correct Answer: Option C

Let the distance travelled on foot be x km.

Then, distance travelled on bicycle = (61 -x) km.

So, x + (61 -x) = 9
4 9

9x + 4(61 -x) = 9 x 36

5x = 80

x = 16 km.

Question 33
A thief is spotted by a policeman from a distance of 100 metres. When the policeman starts the chase, the thief also starts running. If the speed of the thief be 8 km/hr and that of the policeman 10 km/hr, how far the thief will have run before he is overtaken ?

A
200 m
B
400 m
C
600 m
D
300 m
Correct Answer: Option B

Relative speed of the policeman = (10 - 8) km/hr
= 2 km/hr

Time taken by policeman to cover 100 m = (100/1000 X 1/2) hr
= 1/20 hr

In 1/20 hrs, the thief covers a distance of (8 X 1/20) km
= 2/5 km = 400 m.

Question 34
Two guns were fired from the same place at an interval of 10 minutes and 30 seconds, but a person in the train approaching the place hears the second shot 10 minutes after the first. The speed of the train (in km/hr), supposing that speed travels at 330 metres per second, is :

A
19.8
B
111.80
C
59.4
D
58.6
Correct Answer: Option C

Let the speed of the train be X m/sec.
Then,
Distance travelled by the train in 10 min. = Distance travelled by sound in 30 sec.
<=>(X x 10 x 60) = (330 x 30) <=> X = 16.5

Speed of the train = 16.5 m/sec
= 16.5 x 18/5 km/hr
= 59.4 km/hr

Question 35
I walk a certain distance and ride back taking a total time of 37 minutes. I could walk both ways in 55 minutes. How long would it take me to ride both ways ?

A
11 min
B
19 min
C
23 min
D
37 min
Correct Answer: Option B

Let the distance be X km.Then,

(Time taken to walk X km) + (Time taken to ride X km) = 37 min.

(Time taken to walk 2X km) + (Time taken to ride 2X km) = 74 min

But, time taken to walk 2X km = 55 min
∴ Time taken to ride 2X km = (74 - 55) = 19 min.
