Statement and Conclusions questions test your ability to determine whether a conclusion can be logically derived from the information given in a statement or a group of statements. The key is to use only the information provided and avoid assumptions, personal opinions, or outside knowledge.
A reliable approach is to move through the following logical sequence:
READ → IDENTIFY → UNDERSTAND → INFER → TEST → ELIMINATE → CONCLUDE
1. Read the Statement Carefully
The first step is to understand exactly what the statement says. Do not begin by looking for a conclusion immediately. First determine the scope, facts, relationships, and limitations contained in the statement.
While reading, ask:
- What information is explicitly given?
- What relationship exists between the facts?
- What is the statement actually discussing?
- What information is missing?
- What can reasonably be inferred from the given information?
Example:
"Online learning platforms provide students with access to educational resources from different locations."
The statement establishes that online learning platforms provide access to educational resources and that location is less restrictive.
It does not establish that online learning is better than classroom learning or that every student prefers online learning.
2. Identify the Central Information
Before evaluating a conclusion, identify the main subject and main message of the statement.
This prevents you from being distracted by words that appear in both the statement and the conclusion.

Result: Does not follow.
The statement gives information about flexible working hours. It does not establish that all employees will become more productive.

Ask yourself: "Where exactly did this conclusion come from?"
If the answer requires information that is not present in the statement, the conclusion should generally be rejected.
4. Identify Direct and Indirect Implications
A conclusion may follow either directly or through a short chain of logical reasoning.
Direct Implication
The conclusion is clearly supported by the statement.
Statement: All registered employees have access to the company portal.
Conclusion: Registered employees can access the company portal.
The conclusion follows directly from the statement.
Indirect Implication
The conclusion is not stated in exactly the same words but can be derived logically.
Statement 1: All certified trainers have completed the required training program.
Statement 2: Ravi is a certified trainer.
Conclusion: Ravi has completed the required training program.
The conclusion is obtained by connecting the two statements.
5. Test Whether the Conclusion Is Certain
The most important question is not whether the conclusion is possible. The question is whether it must follow from the given information.
Remember:
Possible ≠ Certain
If the statement makes a conclusion possible but does not guarantee it, the conclusion does not necessarily follow.
Example:
Statement: Some employees work remotely.
Conclusion: All employees prefer remote work.
The statement says that some employees work remotely. It does not establish that all employees prefer remote work.
6. Check the Scope of the Conclusion
A conclusion must not be broader or narrower than what the statement supports.

- Never
- Only
- Exactly
- At least
- Everyone
These words make a conclusion stronger or more specific. Such strength must be supported by the statement.
7. Check Definitive Words Carefully
Definitive words are not automatically wrong. The important question is whether the statement provides enough support for that level of certainty.
Statement: All employees who completed the certification program received a certificate.
Conclusion: Every employee who completed the certification program received a certificate.
Result: Follows.
Here, "every" is directly supported by "all".
Therefore, do not reject a conclusion merely because it contains a strong word. Check whether the statement actually supports it.
8. Check for Over-Generalisation
A common trap is converting a limited observation into a universal conclusion.
Statement: Several employees attended the voluntary workshop.
Conclusion: All employees are interested in professional development.
Result: Does not follow.
The statement concerns several employees, while the conclusion applies to all employees.
Always compare the scope of the statement with the scope of the conclusion.
9. Check for Reversal of Information
Another common mistake is reversing the relationship given in the statement.
Consider:
Statement: Employees who complete the safety course are eligible for certification.
Valid inference: Employees who complete the safety course are eligible for certification.
Invalid reversal: Every employee eligible for certification must have completed the safety course.
The statement establishes one direction. It does not necessarily establish the reverse direction.
Shortcut: Never reverse a relationship unless the statement explicitly provides the reverse relationship.
10. Check for Unsupported Cause-and-Effect Relationships
A statement may mention two events without establishing that one caused the other.
Statement: The company introduced a new training platform in January. Employee satisfaction increased in February.
Conclusion: The new training platform caused the increase in employee satisfaction.
Result: Does not necessarily follow.
The two events occur in sequence, but the statement does not establish a causal relationship.
11. Check Whether the Conclusion Contradicts the Statement
A conclusion cannot follow if it directly contradicts information provided in the statement.
Statement: The company has reduced the number of physical offices and expanded its digital services.
Conclusion: The company is increasing the number of physical offices.
Result: Does not follow.
When a conclusion moves in the opposite direction of an explicit fact, eliminate it immediately.
12. Distinguish Fact from Opinion
A conclusion should be logically derived from the statement. It should not depend on personal preference or opinion.
Statement: The city introduced dedicated bicycle lanes on several major roads.
Conclusion: The city has taken a step to support cycling infrastructure.
This can be inferred from the stated action.
However:
Conclusion: Cycling is the best form of transportation in the city.
This is an opinion and is not established by the statement.
13. Evaluate Multiple Statements Together
When more than one statement is provided, do not evaluate each statement in isolation. First determine whether the statements can be logically connected.
Statement 1: All approved vendors must complete the compliance process.
Statement 2: Vendor A is an approved vendor.
Conclusion: Vendor A must complete the compliance process.
Reason: Statement 2 identifies Vendor A as a member of the group described in Statement 1.
This type of question requires chain reasoning.
14. Use Chain Reasoning When Required
Some conclusions are derived by connecting multiple facts.
All A are B
All B are C
Therefore, A are C
For example:
Statement 1: All certified analysts have completed the required examination.

Do not bring external facts, personal experience, current affairs, or assumptions into the reasoning process unless the question specifically requires them.
17. Understand "Either I or II Follows" Carefully
Some examination formats include the option:
"Either conclusion I or conclusion II follows."
This option should not be selected merely because one conclusion sounds possible.
The two conclusions must be considered in the context of the statement and the logical relationship between them.
Important:
Do not treat "possible" as equivalent to "follows". A conclusion must have logical support from the given information.
