Solving an Analogy question becomes much easier when you follow a fixed logical process instead of trying to guess the answer from the words alone. The central task is to identify the exact relationship between the first pair and then apply the same relationship to the second pair.

Use the following framework for word-based analogy questions. The same basic process can also be adapted to number, letter, and figure analogies.
Step 1: Read the Complete Analogy
First, read the complete question carefully without immediately looking for the answer.
Example:
Doctor : Hospital :: Teacher : ?
Do not immediately select an option. First determine how Doctor is related to Hospital.
Observation:
A doctor commonly works in a hospital.
Therefore, Teacher should be related to the place where a teacher commonly works, which is School.
Step 2: Identify the First Pair
The first pair provides the relationship that must be copied. Treat it as the model pair.
A : B
Ask:
- What does A mean in relation to B?
- Is A similar to B?
- Is A opposite to B?
- Is A a part of B?
- Is A used for B?

Step 3: Convert the Relationship into a Sentence
One of the most effective methods is to turn the relationship into a simple sentence.

Convert the first pair into a sentence:

Step 5: Check the Direction of the Relationship
Identifying the relationship type is not enough. You must also check its direction.
Important: The direction of a relationship must remain consistent.
Apple : Fruit means an apple belongs to the category fruit.
Fruit : Apple reverses that relationship.
Similarly:
- Wheel : Car means wheel is a part of car.
- Car : Wheel means car contains a wheel.
When applying the relationship to the second pair, preserve the same direction.
Step 6: Apply the Relationship to the Second Pair
After identifying the relationship between A and B, apply exactly the same relationship between C and the missing term.
A : B :: C : ?
A is related to B in a particular way.
Therefore, C must be related to ? in the same way.
Example:
Bird : Nest :: Lion : ?
A bird lives in a nest. A lion lives in a den. Therefore, the answer is Den.
Step 7: Check Whether the Relationship Is Exact
Sometimes more than one answer choice appears related to the question. In such cases, choose the option that matches the same type and strength of relationship.
For example:
Apple : Fruit
The relationship is not simply "apple is associated with fruit". More precisely:
Therefore, the matching pair should also represent an item-to-category relationship.
Step 8: Eliminate Options with a Different Relationship
If the answer is not immediately obvious, use elimination.
Example:
Pen : Write :: Knife : ?
The first relationship is:

Therefore, eliminate choices that represent:
- an object-to-category relationship,
- a part-to-whole relationship,
- a cause-and-effect relationship, or
- an unrelated association.
The option representing the function of a knife, Cut, is the strongest match.
Step 9: Compare All Answer Choices
Do not stop as soon as one option appears reasonable. Read all the choices.
- Check whether the option has the correct relationship.
- Check whether the direction is correct.
- Check whether the meaning is precise.
- Eliminate options based on a different relationship.
- Compare the remaining options.
Exam Rule: The first apparently correct option is not necessarily the best option. Always look for the most exact relationship.
Step 10: Use Alternative Meanings When Necessary

A common mistake is finding a complicated connection when a simple and direct relationship already explains the pair.
Competitive examination questions generally expect the relationship that is most direct and clearly supported.

If a straightforward relationship explains both pairs, prefer it over a complicated or highly subjective interpretation.
Step 16: Final Verification
Before selecting the answer, perform a final check.
Four-Question Verification
- Have I correctly identified the relationship between the first pair?
- Have I preserved the direction of that relationship?
- Does the selected option follow the same relationship?
- Is it the most precise option among all choices?
If the answer to all four questions is yes, the option is usually the correct choice.
